DO YOU HAVE A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN? READ THIS.

California is making big moves towards keeping families safer. As I briefly stated in the previous blog ‘PROTECT YOUR GARAGE DOOR FROM THESE 4 ELEMENTS’; fire safety has really become more of a topic of conversation in the lives of Californians because wild fires have been breaking out all over California. Climate change is the number one factor of these fires which is caused by the increase of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that are created by burning fossil fuels. California has had 15 out of the 20 largest wildfires happen since the year 2000.

This is scary because we are not at all prepared. For instance, an elderly woman was unable to escape her home in Santa Rosa after a fire storm broke out. She tried pulling on her garage door cord to open her garage door manually since the power went out and she had no battery backup, which she could only raise her heavy wooden garage door about 2″. Thankfully her neighbors saw her struggling to lift her garage door and were able to lift it up just in time to help her escape. Many other of her neighbors in the retirement community encountered the same issue, which prompted her to buy a battery backup. This year we have a law set in place called ‘SB-969’, which requires a battery backup for new installs because of the fire issue. A big problem in Californian is that we still have old openers and if you have a wood door it is nearly impossible to manually lift it.

Many are not so lucky with having their neighbors assist them in emergencies like this elderly woman. Many lives can be saved by having a simple updated garage door opener. If you or someone you know does not have a battery backup, don’t you think it’s time for one?
