Garage doors can make or break the look of your home. We understand that installing a brand new garage door is what you want to make your home look amazing, but if it’s not the color you want, know that you have the ability to paint it yourself!
How to repaint a garage door:
- It’s important that you wash the surface of your garage door in its entirety. Wash each section with trisodium phosphate, like Polyprep 771-137. This is to remove any grease, oil, residue and chalking that’s on the door. Once scrubbed, wash it with water and let it dry.
- To get the paint to adhere to the garage door, roughen up the surface of each section with grit sandpaper. We recommend using 220 grit in order to create an adhesive surface. Make sure that you avoid using any type of steel wool to roughen up the surface. Once roughened up, clean the section with a vacuum or tack cloth.
- Now it’s time to apply the primer coat if the enamel of your garage door is taken off. You can tell if the enamel is gone if the steel is visible or if you see rust. In these cases, apply a coat of zinc phosphate primer. Let it dry for a minimum of 1 hour before you paint the final coat of color you want.
- Apply 2 coats of the color you wish to use! Be sure that when you’re buying paint at your local hardware store, you talk with the employee that’s helping you. Let them know you’re painting a garage door and ask for paint advice.
